Slavery North Artist-In-Residence/Research Fellow Location: UMass Amherst | Department: Dean - Humanities & Fine Arts Work type: Senior/Research Fellow (Amherst Only) • Union: Non-Benefited Job number: 528032 Overview Founded in 2022, Slavery North is an academic and cultural destination at UMass Amherst that explores neglected histories of Transatlantic Slavery in Canada and the US North. The program supports national and international students, artists, and scholars with space, funding, time, and community to produce transformative research outcomes. Fellows credit Slavery North in all outcomes derived from the appointment. Summary The Artist-In-Residence (Research Fellow) will actively participate in the scholarly and social environment of Slavery North. Fellows conduct independent research and create original works in one or more of the five mandate areas, with anti-colonial, de-colonial, post-colonial, and/or anti-racist approaches that challenge Euro-American imperialism and the logic of Transatlantic Slavery. Artistic Categories Applicants can be active in cinema/film, ceramics, mixed media, painting, printmaking, sculpture, textiles, and fiction writing (including novels, plays, screenplays, poetry, etc.). Responsibilities Self-directed research and production of original works with the support of Slavery North leadership in one or more core mandate areas. Participate in the life of Slavery North, including using the shared office space and engaging in related activities at UMass Amherst and the region. Contribute to a culture of conversation, support, and sharing of ideas, resources, and knowledge. Mentor and support undergraduate UMass Amherst students. Present at least one public paper and participate in exhibitions, workshops, or podcasts related to the research project where appropriate during residence. Create social media content about research outcomes and provide biographical information for Slavery North materials. Other Functions Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent. Evidence of consistent creative output of a high standard, a strong record of exhibitions and/or public engagement, and participation in professional, academic, creative, or community organizations. Additional Details Fellows must credit Slavery North Initiative-UMass Amherst in all outcomes derived from their appointment. Work Schedule Flexible schedule. Graduate student fellows are expected to work in the shared office and actively contribute to the Slavery North community.
